Paul McCarthy's inflatable sculpture, 'Brancusi Tree (silver)', examines crucial themes and issues central to the artist's working practice; the very nature of sculpture as a historic genre is called to question, as the light, impermanent 'Tree' bears no formal resemblance to the heavy, sturdy, and permanent works of art that are generally considered sculpture.
In this work, McCarthy also plays with the formal relationship between a butt plug and a tree, an amusing and subversive insight, as noteworthy as the butt plug's unexpectedly modernistic, Brancusi-like perfection.
