Tara Donovan, who utilises common and manufactured materials as components for her installations and sculptures, is known for her process oriented work.
Donovan has earned acclaim for her ability to discover how the inherent physical characteristics of an object enable it to be transformed into art. She has explored the multiplication of these interactions, at times utilising hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of units to generate powerful perceptual phenomenon and subtle atmospheric effects. ‘I wanted to try to penetrate further the blankness in the eyes, so I started leaving lit candles and stuff around - the full voodoo thing: using wax to see if they would destroy themselves. By worshipping your idols too much, you can pretty quickly destroy them. So then I made a series with rock stars. At the Scottish Royal Academy in Edinburgh in 2002, I hung them salon-style…images of all kinds, including self-portraits and the self-portraits of you + me.’
This haunting work celebrates and evokes the atmosphere of the punk era. The self-destructive nature of Sid Vicious, the icon of punk culture, who overdosed aged only 22, is perhaps the ideal muse for this series of works by Gordon. The black and white poster of the Sex Pistols front man, a symbol of rebellion on so many teenagers’ walls in the late 70s is burned out by Gordon as a fitting final conclusion. As Gordon erases the portrait the work reveals and mirrors our contemporary surroundings. As we view these works we are literally, visibly, drawn into the work by our own reflection, hence the title ‘Self-portrait of you + me’ we cannot view the work without viewing ourselves.

Vanessa Beecroft
Vanessa Beecroft’s performance vb62 was held in Palermo, Sicily, in the apse of the unfinished Church of S. Maria dello Spasimo on July 12, 2008. The performance consisted of plaster sculptures and women who were covered in a layer of white paint imitating plaster. The initial scene was static. After the first half hour, the bodies awoke with the smallest of movements. After one hour, the women rose and sensually, like Snow White, raised themselves to sit, walked around the space, or remained seated and still. Their look was elsewhere, lost in the distance, as if they belonged to another reality. The women’s movements caused the white make-up covering their bodies to rub off, allowing the natural color of their bodies to be seen. At the beginning, the group seemed homogenous, then the women ‘broke’ the composition and lost color, becoming carnal, while the sculptures remained rigid and inanimate elements.

Jenny Holzer’s extraordinary photograph is the result of a Xenon light projection on Somerset House, London in 2006. The text is drawn from 'Songs of Zion the Beautiful' by the late Yehuda Amichai, considered Israel’s greatest modern poet. Amichai’s poetry deals with issues of day-to-day life, and with philosophical questions of the meaning of life and death. Her work is characterized by gentle irony and original, often surprising imagery.

Toby Ziegler
Toby Ziegler’s paintings and sculptures orchestrate a continual oscillation between abstraction and figuration and between classical composition and its digital manipulation and obfuscation. His process begins with the appropriation of an image which, through endless reproduction, has passed into the visual subconscious.
The image is then rendered by computer into modular planes, worked on, developed and modified and at last fabricated as a sculpture, often in paper, card or oxidized aluminium. The classical Venus which is the source for ‘Trophy’ becomes informed by this process of alteration. Its fragmentation and contrapposto attests its classical source, while its lumpen modeling suggests something altogether more primitive. Ziegler’s work is included in major public and private collections internationally. Recent exhibitions include: 176, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2010), travelling to The New Art Gallery, Walsall and Kiasma Helsinki in 2011-12; Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai (2010); Malmö Konsthall, Sweden (2008); Tate Britain, London (2007); Camden Arts Centre, London (2006); Le Plateau, Paris (2006) and Le Consortium, Dijon (2005).

Keith Tyson
The support surface for each Nature Painting is an acid primed aluminium panel or mirror. Onto this a variety of paints, pigments and other substances are poured and allowed to interact in a number of specified ways. What the painting finally looks like is thus determined by several factors including the viscosity of the different fluids and their behaviour under gravitational pull, the way in which ambient and local temperature affects such things as rates of evaporation or chemical reaction, the miscibility or otherwise of the liquids involved, the quantities used, and the order in which they are applied. The outcome may resemble any one of the myriad things to be seen in nature, from a section of the Horse Head nebula to a histology plate, a rock formation or the scum around an industrial outflow. The title Nature Paintings, however, refers not to the subject matter of the works, but to the manner in which they are made. As Tyson points out, the significant aspect of the series is not that they are paintings of nature, but that they are paintings by nature.

McDermott & McGough
David McDermott and Peter McGough, born 1952 and 1958 respectively, met in New York in the early 1980s. The duo became known for their self-immersion in past eras, and by creating paintings, installations and photographs fuelled by this self-imposed time travel; the techniques, subjects and styles used were unique to the period. In creating work that reflected a different era and by reconstructing imagery from the time, McDermott & McGough in turn questioned chronological boundaries of art history. The sensibility of photo-realist paintings of 1960s era televisions are filled with a single black-and-white scene with an actress’s expressive face filling the screen. The moving image, especially significant with the introduction of black and white T.V. was a defining medium of the early 1960s.

Francis Alÿs
‘‘The Camgun’, a sculpture touching the border between a camera and a machine gun, is also a reflection of Francis Alÿs’ position as a chronicler of the violence of life in the Mexican capital. Around the same time that Alÿs was exploring the idea of the camera as a weapon in ‘Gringo’ he was expanding the theme in ‘Camguns’, a series of assemblages of wooden rifles and found film rolls and reels. Evoking the simulated weapons used by the Zapatista Army when they appeared on the Mexican scene in 1994, this work explicitly connects the ‘shooting’ of images to that of bullets.'

Caro Niederer
In 2008 Caro Niederer embarked upon a series of colour paintngs. Expressionistic in their style, they describe the emotion rather than the fact of their scenes through lyrical brush-marks and a luminous palette of ochre, cerulean blue and alizarin crimson. In parts the series has been inspired by the late work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted in the Swiss village of Davos. Niederer’s paintings are laconic and poetic, suggesting nostalgia’s distillation of the stuff of existence.
Niederer sets in motion processes that she surrenders ultimate control of, allowing memory to cohere with anticipation.

Rodney Graham
In 2004, Graham began a series of works that reflect how art is created, looking at the practice of The Artist. The first works in this vein were works on paper in an idiom of modernism that recalled the mid-twentieth-century School of Paris. The works were in a small format and consisted of Liquitex and crayon on paper. He followed these with a series of paintings, this time oil on canvas, employing a version of Cubism, in particular with references to Braque and Picasso. Many of these paintings in abstract, semi-abstract and figurative idioms have been worked on intensively, resulting in rich, heavily textured surfaces, and framed with handmade white frames.

Barry Reigate
Barry Reigate’s practice comprises an engagement with cultural exhaustion and a doomed attempt to find an escape from the impasse imposed by our present condition through the imagined freedom of play. The work takes its initial cues from both the overloaded world of our consumer culture and the equally crowded landscape of post-war art. Invoking the spirit of the first, darker and critical, flourishing of Pop Art and combining that with the tactics of formal repetition employed in various strands of Conceptual and Minimal Art, Reigate has developed a language that, with calculated coolness, manifests the degenerate and terminal stage of our visual culture.
Beyond being a history painter of sorts, Reigate has consistently explored notions of Play as at least a personal route out of the inertia of a fin de siècle cultural moment. Drawing on the traditions of Art Brut, Magritte’s little regarded Vache period works and the works of Asger Jorn, Reigate attempts to imagine and deploy Play as a site of resistance or immunity from the instrumental demands placed on culture by capital.

Gideon Rubin
Austere and elemental, the palette is subdued, subtle, seemingly faded. Forms are reduced to a few sure brushstrokes that suggest rather than describe a figure or landscape. Identifying facial features are lost, rendered in a swirl or smudge of paint. It’s like the memory of something that’s at the point of fading completely, or remembering a history that you were told about but never actually experienced first hand.
Born in Israel, Rubin graduated from the Slade, London and School of Visual Arts in New York.
He has exhibited widely including Alon Segev Gallery and Beit Bialik in Tel Aviv, Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco and New York, and will be having a solo exhibition at Galerie Karsten Greve in Cologne in 2012.

Izhar Patkin
Izhar Patkin has been living and working in New York since 1979, and has since become one of Israel’s most internationally acclaimed artists. He is offering up to five individual portrait commissions in his signature ‘Veil’ style. Patkin’s first ‘veil’ painting is in the Whitney permanent collection.
The Tel Aviv Museum and the Open Museum are organising a mid-career survey of Patkin’s work entitled ‘The Veil Cycle,’ which is scheduled to open in June 2012. The show will include works from the collections of MOMA, MOCA, LACMA, the Guggenheim and the Whitney, as well as works from the collections of the Tel Aviv Museum & the Open Museum in Israel. All have collected Patkin’s work in depth.

David Adika
The choice of a clearly non-documentary visual rhetoric extricates Adika’s objects from their cultural role as images of the ‘other,’ of the one ‘who has no part,’ and as ‘signifiers’ of social class and place. In contrast to a photographic strategy of ‘pointing,’ which attempts to relate the visible to predetermined categories and identities, these photographs offer a rhetoric of ‘staging,’ which seeks neither to elevate the ‘low’ nor to lower the ‘high,’ an act that would inevitably reaffirm existing social and cultural hierarchies. Adika’s women appear as idealized or schematic images, such as the woman in a poster advertising a bridal salon in Untitled (Acre, Pink Portrait). In Untitled (Acre, Bag of Pita Bread), the figurative image of the palm tree and the carpet supposedly represent a form of ‘Oriental taste’ characterized by visual excess, which stands out in contrast to the abstract geometric pattern that implicitly relates abstraction and classicism to Western culture.

James Aldridge
‘The watercolours in this series take as source a time when natural history illustration was intimately bound up with scientific exploration. Sometimes these images were compiled from writings with no reference to visual material but more often they were taken from collected specimens, on voyages made solely for this purpose. These were slightly ‘wrong’ or even fantastical and they highlight the problem of depicting animals and plants in a naturalistic way. It is still the case that our reading of images of natural history are as connected to folklore and superstition as to the subject. The idea of beauty and repulsion in nature is directly informed by this strange history.’
Aldridge graduated from the Royal College of Art and has had recent exhibitions with Gabriel Rolt, Amsterdam, and Galeria Casado Santa Pau in Madrid. He has worked on site-specific commissions for St Bart’s Hospital and the 7th floor Restaurant in Tate Modern. Aldridge is in many UK collections including British Airways, Siemens, Stuart Evans, David Roberts and the Brandes Collection in Tel Aviv. He now lives and works in Sweden.

Shai Azoulay
Scenes depicted in Shai Azoulay’s paintings call to mind folk tales. Some aspects, such as the microphone, may recall German Neo-Expressionist paintings from the late 70s connected to young culture. In Azoulay’s work, it is not the colours that are bright, but the painting. It is open, entirely exposed to view. Azoulay’s narratives tend to be popular and allegorical. It has an inkling of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice style: magic, which might get out of hand. Shai Azoulay has been awarded several prizes and has exhibited extensively in Israel and internationally. His works are in prestigious private collections in Israel and form part of the Tel Aviv Museum collection.
He says: ‘The painting mono is about the moment that you perform - you’re on the top of the hill - and also about the moment after - that you can fall from that hill.’

Hannah Collins
These three images are taken from Collins’s new collaboration with the Michelin starred innovative chef of El Bulli, Ferran Adria. Hannah has included over 200 images in their book, The Fragile Feast: Routes to Ferran Adria, recently published by Hatje Cantz.
Collins and Adria’s pictures and writings create a document of global connections, geographical diversity, historical precedents and sublime aesthetic refinement. Collins chose rare and unusual things to photograph, travelling to Colombia in search of lulos, Japan to see where miso and wasabi come from, Greece for botarga, to Ecuador for roses or cane. From Galicia come seaweed and percebes, from Cadiz, sea anemones and from Salamanca, a sublime ham. Near the restaurant at elBulli are pine nuts, espardenyes, pumpkin, sheep’s milk and ceps. Hannah Collins is a Turner Prize nominee working in several media including film and photography. She first became known for her large-scale black and white photographs, one of which was part of the opening display at the Tate Modern. Her works have been shown internationally, including Leo Castelli, New York, Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis and most recently in various museums in Colombia, Chile, Havana and Argentina. Last year Hannah had a major retrospective at Caixa Forum in Madrid and Barcelona.

Dan Coombs
My compositions arise almost by chance through the making of collages, which act as studies for the finished paintings. The final painting fuses everything together and gives the images a reality. I am looking for situations that are powerful, dramatic and touch something in the psyche. The fact of painting depicting a frozen moment fascinates me, as does the blurring of the imaginary and the real. The paintings are fictions drawn from real experiences. I’m trying to make something that is both primitive and sophisticated at the same time, ‘whose voids are deliberately left open to be explored and exploited by the viewer’ (Juliet Bailey in the catalogue for “Dan Coombs: Heaven and Earth”, Fine Art Society, 2011). Coombs’s small collages of found illustrations and photographs provide the foundation of his work.
His exhibitions include Cornerhouse, Manchester, The Approach, London, 7th Biennale d’art Contemporain de Lyon and Laing Gallery, Newcastle.

William Eggleston
William Eggleston photographs ‘democratically’--literally photographing the world around him. His large-format prints monumentalize everyday subjects, everything is equally important; every detail deserves attention. Though he began his career making black-and-white images, he soon abandoned them to experiment with colour technology to record experiences in more sensual and accurate terms at a time when colour photography was largely confined to commercial advertising. In 1976 with the support of John Szarkowski, the influential photography historian, critic, and curator, Eggleston mounted ‘Colour Photographs’ a now famous exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. William Eggleston’s Guide, in which Szarkowski called Eggleston’s photographs ‘perfect,’ accompanied this groundbreaking one-person show that established his reputation as a pioneer of colour photography. Eggleston has published his work extensively. He continues to live and work in Memphis, and travels considerably for photographic projects.

The painting ‘United in Different Guises XX’ is part of an ongoing series of works that share the same title ‘United in Different Guises’ and are numbered accordingly. The title refers to a proposed shared function. This function sits somewhere between a communicative role and the symbolic. The source imagery used is a mixture of signage and design; which is reconstructed to form gendered symbols. Their scale and material quality mimic the appearance of flags and banners. By folding, scuffing and gradually aging the paintings, a suggested utility appears. What is left is an object that questions notions of symbolism and authenticity, allowing the work to function beyond the realms of painting. Neil Farber
Taking a simple but expressive line drawing style that is reminiscent of children’s book illustrations, Neil Farber’s work blurs the boundary between childhood fear and grown-up fantasy. The artist has created a world populated by an odd cast of characters that includes waif-like children, cats, dogs, and ghosts, combining innocence with a complicated and often foreboding sense of the absurd. Indeed, it is out of these contradictions that the work’s dark humour is born. Farber’s drawings remind us that among the range of emotions, humour is arguably the most complicated – and perhaps the most human.
The artist says: “Sky Ocean is a diagram of the ocean, except that the ocean is also the sky and the contents are a mess of people and monsters and everything is mislabeled. It is an homage to the scientific method.”

It is an abstract view that represents the atmosphere as much as the geography of it’s location. The road is an old roman way still un-made, strewn with stones bumps and puddles. The three 3 conjoined ponds are quite site specific, though the building itself is completely hidden from this viewpoint. It is one of a series of landscapes directly derived unexpectedly from being there.’

Kendell Geers
Kendell Geers’ work has examined the proliferation of violence in the mass media and how images of violence have become banalised through media-centric methods of representation. Often his work references political issues, racial politics and violence in South Africa, his country of origin. Geers appropriates and edits information from a wide variety of sources: from history, literature and religion to media and film, in order to challenge or subvert existing readings and enable new ones.
His work seeks to force a confrontation with the viewer, and is concerned with power, its relations, and the manner in which it shapes our experiences. Often described as interventions, the works, with their relentless physicality, act to shock and disrupt our perception of the status quo. Working in a variety of media, Geers uses and subverts familiar signs from art history and pop culture. His famous pissing into Duchamp’s urinal in Venice, for example, implied a rejection of the sanctity of the canon and the inviolability of history. He prefers to be in a position in which he may pose his own questions and arrive at conclusions that may be at odds with convention or orthodoxy.
Geers’s work has been shown in numerous international group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (2007) and Documenta (2002).

David Goldblatt is renowned for his photographs in the furthest-flung sectors of South Africa. His examination of small rural towns includes 'Intersections Intersected', which focuses on the intersections of latitude and longitude in the country’s hinterland and the effects on small-town populations of being based in remote areas traversed by major lines of transport. This particular image is one of a series sub-titled In the time of AIDS in which each image upon closer inspection reveals an image of the AIDS ribbon. The series highlights the plight of the country as having one of the world’s highest incidences of HIV infection.

Nick Goss
Nick Goss’ paintings are closely involved within the paradox of observation and memory, seeking out locations and subjects that co-exist between the landscape and the industrial, the recognisable and the ambiguous. The romanticism of travel and the exotic are sustained throughout this practice, which incorporates the traditions of drawing, watercolour and oil paint. The echo of enigmatic figures such as Paul Gauguin and Henri Rousseau have played their part in inspiring these canvasses, along with a whole raft of literary influences, including American authors John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy. All of which demonstrates the ability of the practice of painting to accommodate the historic alongside the contemporary, and to integrate the conceptual within the visual.
The lush vegetation of Rousseau’s tropical jungles and the intense colour of Gauguin’s Tahitian paradise are a far cry from Goss’ studio in east London. Yet, it is here, amongst the grey urban grime, that these paintings are made, and in which they establish their context; a contemporary, apocalyptic distance from their isolated, romanticised precedents.

Siobhan Hapaska
Siobhán Hapaska’s first major solo exhibition, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 1995, introduced the two major strands in her sculptural practice at that time. The show’s title piece, ‘St Christopher’, was a scrupulously naturalistic representation of the patron saint of travelers lugubriously cut off at the knees. Other works, both wall-based and freestanding, resembled nothing on earth. Strange, mutant forms in immaculately finished, opalescent fiberglass, they appeared to have traveled back from an imaginary future. Much of Hapaska’s work ever since has referred obliquely to travel and rootlessness, suggesting a restless yearning for an indeterminate elsewhere. Her early incorporation of sound into her sculptural environments has more recently been complemented by the production of her first film, premiered at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
She has had solo exhibitions in recent years at the Kerlin Gallery Dublin; Sezon Museum of Art, Tokyo, Japan; Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York and Camden Arts Centre, London.

The formal simplicity of the print is given depth by embossing, which mimics the surface variations that are evident in Hume’s paintings, and adds a sensual dimension to the flat surface of the print.

William Kentridge
William Kentridge is an international artist best known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. Despite his ongoing exploration of non-traditional media, the foundation of his art has always been drawing and printmaking.
Since his participation in Dokumenta X in Kassel in 1997, there have been solo shows of his work in many museums and galleries around the world. In 2009 he had a large touring exhibition, beginning in San Francisco, traveling to museums in Texas, Florida, and MoMA, New York, before continuing to Europe. Kentridge’s recent work includes Telegrams from the Nose, a collaborative performance with composer Francois Sarhan; and for the Sydney Biennale of 2008, both I am not me, the horse is not mine, a solo lecture/performance piece, and an installation of the same title, comprising eight projections. Among Kentridge’s current projects is work towards a production of Shostakovich’s opera The Nose, to premier at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Masakatsu Kondo
Kondo’s paintings draw on the landscape depictions and symbolic imagery of mass media; vulnerable creatures are posed against impossibly sublime scenery, the eerily enhanced scenes suggestive of a peculiarly modern sense of isolation. Though the work 'Snow Land' avoids overt messages of isolation the work shares the artist’s concern with the act of observing the grandeur of nature.
The Romatic motif of man pitted against nature is not only a
reminder of the transience of being, but a call to stand up to deal
with it by ourselves: his work is not merely a Romantic conceit, but a
declaration of intent. In 1990 Kondo won the Wilson Steel Memorial Medal at University College London, and in 1993 second place in the Granada Foundation Prize, Manchester; he was awarded second place in the John Moores Painting Prize at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1997.

Focusing on religion, creationism, mythology, and science, Lenkiewicz engages in the elaborate project of ‘re-sequencing’ (borrowing the term from geneticists) the existing language of images into a new and fantastical visual syntax.
Lenkiewicz’s style is reminiscent of the Renaissance artists, echoing the drawings of the Old Masters with their technical ability and attention to detail, whilst stamping his own individuality with equal weight. By adopting the most classical of materials – silverpoint or pencil for the drawings, oil on canvas for the paintings and bronze for the sculpture the artist manages to smuggle an explosive contraband of challenging imagery into the history of art.

Hew Locke

Anthony McCall is one of the seminal artists of American avant-garde cinema. His films and installations from the seventies such as Line Describing a Cone, Long Film for Four Projectors, and Four Projected Movements, represent an extraordinary meditation on the medium of film and the politics of the audience’s physical and conceptual relationship to it. 'Column (Estuary Fog II)' is a study for a work that McCall will realise in Liverpool in 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, a column of mist spiralling as far as 60 miles up into the sky on a clear and calm day, which is the artists most ambitious project to date and will undoubtedly become an instant landmark on the artistic map in the UK.

Roy Mordechay
Through a cosmology of symbols and characters, Mordechay’s work dances between the languages of pop culture and personal mythology. Motifs which respond to ideals of masculinity and heroism, the horrors of conflict, and the pressures of traversing multiple identities as an Israeli are combined with a latent energy steadily ticking between control and chaos, waiting to go off. In 'A Burst of Parrots' (2011), this energy is released as an explosion of tiny birds engulfs the canvas. The humour of this image seems to de-emphasise its serious tone, yet with the juxtaposition of strength and delicacy, vitality and destruction, the work can be seen as either boyish fantasy or a sharp insight into the current political climate. Mordechay’s works have been exhibited at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Nachum Gutman Museum in Tel Aviv, the Petah Tikva Museum of Art and the Haifa Museum of Art.

What Does Not Kill you is one of the first sculptures in which the artist has combined bluebottles with plant seeds. These materials have a great significance within her practice, acting as signifiers of both the beginning and end of life. They embody the constant change that surrounds us and, in a way, the horror that change holds for us. ‘My work is about our relationship with the rest of nature, explored through notions of change, the passing of time, and the transience of everything around us. Animals, birds and insects have been present…and I use suspense to create something akin to frieze frames. I do not use the animals to provide a narrative, but rather to introduce an element of movement or energy.’
Morgan has exhibited in the Palais de Tokyo, FIAC and has won the Royal British Society of Sculptors Annual Bursary Award.

The ‘Peg Paintings’ have been ongoing since 2004. They bring together figurative components into a large composed abstract field. Painting them has become a daily ritual, a way of opening up to a day filled with uncertainty. Each figure began as a self-portrait, a different intimate moment, no peg is ever the same. An army of quiet, delicately rendered female nudes, (one per wooden clothes peg), are massed together in tightly regimented lines to create a work that for me has a pulsating dynamic rhythm. I am interested in taking simple tools and everyday objects, and exploring their aesthetic limitations. They are neither figurative nor abstract, but dance along the boundary between the two.

Gosha Ostretsov
Ostretsov is one of Russia’s leading contemporary artists, questioning the nature of power and despotism in post Soviet Russia, using the broad style of the comic book in which hero and villain are crystal clear and the struggle between humanity and a ruling government are evident. He splatters bright coloured graffiti across the picture plane creating his own style suggestive of a techno folk art. His images of the destruction of fat capitalists and greedy authoritarian systems of control suggest a redistribution of energy and power. Ostretsov’s enemies are not implicitly Fascism, Stalinism or Capitalism, but any system of government that seeks to progressively tailor the society it means to serve. The power of his images lies in the universality of the artist’s message and mission.
'Energy Never Dies', 2009 is part of a longstanding project, New Government. The work includes masks, painting, sports, text, fashion, advertising, photography, performance art, video, comics and other media. Ostretsov appears to advocate a utopia of a world without power, without government, without money, where people follow their dreams.

Miho Sato works from commonplace images derived from magazines, postcards and television. These images are collected but often lay dormant until such a time that they trigger a relationship to a childhood memory. It is as though each image exists between the world that it resides within and a world that is estranged from its social constitution, notably within memory. Her work is immersed in image–culture and yet it is in the disconnection with this world that her work finds its condition. Miho Sato’s paintings are pared down to the point of self-effacement (all her people are faceless) but their indifference, their neutral attitude, is not directed towards themselves. In their construction and execution they are exquisitely poised towards the viewer, but they expect nothing of the viewer.

Sandra Shashou
Shashou has developed a diverse practice incorporating both portraiture and abstract work with a constant dialogue and tension between abstraction and realism.
Her most recent portraits represent well-known British and international individuals, icons of public life. The images are constructed through a complex layering of newspaper cuttings, introducing a fragmented narrative, while the tonal values of the newspaper are integrated into the image through adjacent layers of paint. Viewing the work from a distance, the collaged and painted elements coalesce into an instantly recognisable image, the face of a well-known personage, while closer examination gives the viewer the reward of a literal reading of the face, snippets of articles partially legible through the paint, while the varied weight, touch and colour of paint marks is both sensual material experience and visual interpretation of character and expression.

George Shaw
‘This watercolour is one more instalment of a series of paintings and drawings of what used to be a pub, The Hawthorn. I think the first image I made of the place was when it was a local boozer in 1999. What you can see here are piles of rubble that used to be something. Over the years I have found myself making paintings of things that are no longer there…. It all began when I was no longer there - both the first and last thing to leave.’
Landscape artists once sought the sublime through the rendering of pastoral scenes, but Shaw records the mundane, the quotidian and the overlooked. In doing so, he somehow renders the everyday mysterious. Shaw, as the Turner Prize 2011 show at Baltic reaffirms, is an artist curiously out of step and out of time. Like the references to classic sitcoms that pepper his speech (The Likely Lads, Hancock’s Half Hour, Steptoe and Son) and his sartorial style (brogues, button-down shirt, Crombie, more reformed football hooligan than carefully dishevelled bohemian), his paintings hark back to a time when things seemed simpler. He is a painter of everyday life as it is, though there is precious little life in his paintings: no adults, no children, no mongrels or pitbulls or startled wood pigeons, just quiet, deserted places.

Khen Shish
Khen Shish still looks back to her childhood in Sefad where she used to wander in the Wadis by herself, day dreaming in reverie, collecting leaves and flowers. Shish’s art balances on the scale between preservation of that raw, formless lava that motivates the artistic practise, and the skill and command acquired over the years. She oscillates along the axis between erupting intuition and profound understanding. Khen Shish is an MFA graduate of the Bezalel Academy, a winner of several prestigious awards in Israel. Her works belongs to collections of both the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and Israel Museum, Jerusalem and to prominent private collections in Israel.

‘‘Facing You’, is part of a series of faces, made in mirror polished stainless steel. The very nature of the reflective surface, reflects back to the observer, their own face. Hence you are facing you. The head turns depicting the several sides of one’s face. The one we show openly, and the one we don’t.’ Sterling, although graduated from business school, studied art in South Africa at The Ainsley Art Academy, and later started making sculpture in England. Producing works for private collections in Switzerland, South Africa, USA and the U.K.

Amikam Toren
Amikam Toren has been producing Armchair Paintings since the late 1980s. The artist’s use of cheaply bought street market paintings and the resulting significant increase in the painting selling price, questions the issues of authorship and value in Art. The words cut out from the canvas are idiomatic expressions which have almost lost their original literal meaning through constant use, just as they obscure the original image on the painting.
Toren was born in Israel and co-founded Wallpaper Magazine in 1974. He has exhibited with Anthony Reynolds Gallery since 1985 and with Noga Gallery in Tel Aviv.

This is not work that is easily named. It might be said that there is no object nor subject but rather just a state of indeterminate in-between. I have an idea that it is work that is attempting to find a place between thought and matter and in doing so is creating a region of complexity that negotiates issues of duration. In this sense we experience suspension between opening and closure not as a blank deferral but rather as insistent immanence. Infinity is visually beyond the threshold of representation but a sense of the forever and forever is in evidence and this leads us to the edge of a continent where we are unmade by the very traces that lead us there. I am left with the notion that we must first follow the logic of such work and then erase all steps we have made to comprehend it in order that we might destroy such encounters with positional logic altogether. Frank Van Reenen
Frank van Reenen’s work features a selection of sculptures, prints, paintings and computer-generated animation. A pioneer of Flash animation film-making in the 90s and an accomplished sculptor, van Reenen extracts sentimentality and nostalgia from his 50s based toy and comic collection, transferring dilemmas of taste and emotion onto the work. The artist’s wry sense of humour and self-conscious ironic take on the world, combined with autobiographical references, form the basis of his conceptual and aesthetic approach.

Rebecca Warren
Rebecca Warren’s sculptures develop long-standing lines of sculptural enquiry into the history of art. It’s an enquiry that can be traced back to its prehistoric magical inception, through ideals of representation of the human, to modern and postmodern reduction. In this process, inevitably, it takes in the work of canonical male artists such as Boccioni, Degas, Renoir, De Kooning, as well as cartoonist Robert Crumb. Warren’s position regarding her antecedents is very much a fluid one, moving from homage to caricature, from celebration to willful dissolution.
Modelled in clay and then cast in bronze, Zhizni takes the female figure and pushes it into an exaggerated, distorted form that follows both a cartoonish and classical line.

Marnie Weber
This photographic collage is a prime example of the artist’s multimedia exploration of fantasy, story-telling, and the grotesque. In this scene, two of Weber’s typically ghoulish fairy tale characters are presented in an eerie wooded setting, suggesting a narrative that is at once familiar and strange.
The artist says: ‘Forest Bound. A bewildered dirty bunny finds a beautiful masked maiden tied up alone in the forest. He holds a bouquet of red flowers which represents his love for her. Will he keep the girl for his own love object or will he show the ultimate gift of love and free her back into the wild?’

Nicole Wermers
Nicole Wermers’s sculpture has been widely noted as a form of ‘three-dimensional collage’. Her art tends to avoid humanization; her things are stubbornly thinglike. Her work seems closest to an Italian tradition, one that flows through the vast opening created by Lucio Fontana’s concetto spaziale and takes in the ‘fake sculptures’ of Pino Pascali or Gianni Piacentino’s vehicles. In this tradition, the pathos of the humanized object is avoided in the conviction—as Piacentino put it—that ‘art had to have something to do with beauty and decoration, even when taken to extremes.’
Art in this tradition forms part of the theater of human habitation rather than standing in for the protagonist who lives and suffers in it. Focused on the meaning and phenomenology of contemporary space, Wermers succeeds in formulating a more extreme sense of décor, at once sensuous and austere.

Douglas White
Douglas White’s work is driven by a fascination with the possibilities of discarded and overlooked materials and articulates an affinity with found objects, both natural and man-made. Material such as, exploded tyres, arson-struck recycling bins, and decaying trees have often been subject to a violent change, revealing an inner delicacy or potency. In his Dark Moon series White sets an ethereal tone, illuminating circles of wax in framed lightboxes. Working in a strangely alchemical method of pouring pigmented wax onto boiling water, the unique result is the moon as a space of reverie and contemplation. White’s Dark Moon series present a unique physical presence and hint at an odd aesthetic quality, but never reveals strong narrative meanings. They are like talismans left by a now distant forgotten culture, which still retains a suggestion, or even a threat, of power and purpose.
Douglas White has been included in New Contemporaries, Jerwood Sculpture Prize, Man Drawing Prize, Baibakov Arts Project, Moscow and Oude Kerk Amsterdam.
