Jewish Heritage Programs
These programs have become one of the major activities for the public. With your generous support we were able to promote and offer high quality programs at affordable prices for the family. The coming year will be very challenging for us as we have to attract audiences to our programs while most of the Museum galleries are not open to the public. We see it as extremely important to keep people coming to the Museum during its renovation.
The four festivals of Hanukkah, Purim, Pesach and Sukkoth have established themselves as time of pilgrimage to the Museum. Families anticipate new and creative events related to the holidays, and we provide this by relating aspects of the festival to recent exhibitions and innovative workshops.
The next holiday, Hanukkah 2008, will be the last opportunity to celebrate the Water Exhibition, so we are planning events which will will combine elements of light, fire and water. The program will relate to the subject of the holiday, to the period of the Second Temple, and to the tensions between Judaism and Pagansim. The events will include performances, tours and workshops based on these elements that can, for instance, be demonstrated in the Shine of the Book and at the Jerusalem Model.
Although the structure and scale of the Heritage Programs have been determined, it is very difficult to plan all details ahead for the entire year. Before every festival the staff sits in brainstorming meetings and puts together the event. We plan to have these programs on the same scale as last year, meaning $20,000 for each festival and $80,000 in total.
